indoor vehicle and motorcycle storage in Aylmer

the building is heated, alarmed and sprinklered, and there is no public access. your vehicle sits inside, out of the salt and the sun, in a building nobody wanders through.

where we are, and who this suits

we are at 188 Talbot St W in Aylmer, Ontario. that is a straightforward drive from St Thomas, Tillsonburg, Belmont, Springfield, Port Burwell and most of Elgin County, and under an hour from London.

most of the vehicles we store fall into a few groups:

  • convertibles and summer cars that should not spend February on a driveway.
  • motorcycles over the winter, which is the bulk of what we take.
  • classics and project vehicles, where humidity and temperature swings do more damage than mileage ever will.
  • vehicles belonging to people who are away, for a season or longer.

why indoor and heated matters in Ontario

outdoor storage and an unheated shed are not the same thing as this, and the difference shows up on the vehicle.

salt and moisture. a car parked outside through an Ontario winter sits in salt spray and freeze-thaw cycles. both attack from underneath, where you do not see it until something is structural.

condensation. an unheated building swings with the weather, and every swing puts moisture on cold metal. that is how surface rust starts on brake discs, and how mould gets into an interior.

rodents. they chew wiring looms and nest in air boxes, and the repair is usually four figures. a sealed heated building is a far less attractive place to spend a winter than a barn.

Sun and ozone. for anything stored long term, ultraviolet fades paint and interiors and hardens rubber. indoors, none of that happens.

motorcycles

motorcycles take the least room and get the most benefit, because a bike stored outdoors under a cover is essentially stored in a damp tent.

at $45 a month, plus $10 if you want it on a battery tender, it is usually less than people expect.

the tender is worth the ten dollars. a bike battery left alone from November to April is often finished by spring, and a new one costs more than a winter of tending. add fuel stabiliser before you drop it off and the bike starts in April instead of needing a shop visit first.

what to do before you store a vehicle

  • fill the fuel tank, and add stabiliser if it will sit more than a few months. a part-empty tank collects condensation.
  • wash it, including underneath. storing a salty car just gives the salt a warm place to work.
  • fresh oil if it is due. used oil is acidic and it sits against bearings all winter.
  • check tire pressures. flat spots form on soft tires.
  • do not leave the parking brake on for months. blocks or chocks are better.
