the work is written down before it is done

you get told what was found, what it will cost, and what happens if it waits, and the price is agreed before anybody starts. if something changes once the job is open, which it sometimes does, you get a call rather than a surprise at the counter.

the vehicles we sell get the same treatment, and we publish the bill

this is the part that is genuinely different, and it is the reason the shop and the dealership are the same business.

every vehicle we sell has its reconditioning work published on its page: what was done and what it cost. front pads and rotors. four tires. a timing belt. with the figure beside it.

not "210-point inspection", which is a number designed to sound thorough while telling you nothing about what was actually wrong with the specific car in front of you.

we publish it including the cars where the number is large and the cars where it is small, because a figure you only show when it flatters you is not information, it is advertising.

what that costs us, and why we do it anyway

it means a customer can see we spent $340 on a car and ask why it was not more. it means we cannot quietly skip something and describe the car as fully inspected.

that is the point. a shop that has published what it did has made itself checkable, and being checkable is the only version of "trust us" that means anything.

tell us. a shop is not judged by whether it ever makes a mistake, because every shop does. it is judged by what happens next.
