MAF sensor: hard starting, stalling and lost power

the mass airflow sensor sits between the air filter and the engine, and it does one job: measure how much air is going in, so the computer knows how much fuel to add.

feed it a wrong number and every fuel calculation the engine makes is wrong.

what a failing MAF feels like

• hard starting, particularly when cold
• stalling at idle or when coming to a stop
• hesitation when you accelerate, like a stumble before it picks up
• noticeably worse fuel economy
• a check engine light, often P0101 or P0171

the symptoms overlap heavily with a vacuum leak, a dirty throttle body and a failing fuel pump, which is why the code alone should not be enough to condemn the part.

why they fail, and the cheap thing to try first

most do not fail. they get dirty. the sensing element is a fine heated wire or film, and oil or dust coating it changes its readings.

two common causes: an air filter left too long, and an oiled performance air filter with too much oil on it, which is a genuinely common way to ruin a MAF.

cleaning it is often the fix. specific MAF cleaner, no touching the element, let it dry fully. it costs a few dollars and works often enough to be worth trying before buying a sensor.

what we do about it

we test rather than swap. a MAF that reads plausibly at idle can still be wrong under load, and comparing what it reports against what the engine should be drawing tells you which it is.

if the code says MAF and the cause is a split intake hose downstream of it, replacing the sensor changes nothing and you have paid for a part you did not need.
