tell us the symptom, not the fix

the single most useful thing you can say when booking is what the vehicle is actually doing.

"it grinds when I brake at low speed" tells us to set aside time for the brakes. "it needs a service" does not, and the appointment ends up either too short or longer than you needed.

worth mentioning:

  • when it happens. cold start, at speed, when turning, only in the wet
  • what it sounds or feels like, in your own words. nobody expects the technical term
  • how long it has been doing it, and whether it is getting worse
  • any warning lights, and whether they are steady or flashing. a flashing check engine light means stop driving it and call us

what we do before we do anything

you get told what was found, what it will cost, and what happens if it waits. then you decide. if the price changes once a job is open, you get a call rather than a surprise at the counter.

we separate urgent from soon from eventually, because a shop where everything is urgent is selling rather than diagnosing.
